How to play Word Beacon
Type any five letters or tap the on-screen keyboard, then submit a guess. The current row previews letters as you type. A repeated guess is rejected without using a try; keyboard colors and the used-letter row track your clues. A green tile means the letter is in the right position; yellow means the letter appears elsewhere; gray means it is not in the answer after accounting for repeated letters.
You have six tries and no time limit. Every player gets the same Daily answer on the same date, and a new one arrives at midnight. Your first finished Daily result is saved locally and can be shared as a spoiler-free color grid. Practice uses a different random word and a separate best score. A daily streak tracks consecutive solved dates on this device.
Controls and round details
Enter five letters with a physical or on-screen keyboard, then press Guess or Enter. Backspace deletes a letter. You have six distinct guesses and no time limit. Each guess must be a real five-letter word, and repeating a guess does not use a turn. Daily answers come from a list of more than 2,000 common words and do not repeat until the whole list has been used. Choose Practice word for a separate random answer; consecutive practice replays avoid repeating the immediately previous word. A finished Daily round leads to practice on Play Again.
Word Beacon scoring
Green means the right letter in the right place; yellow means that letter belongs elsewhere; gray means no remaining copy of that letter belongs in the answer. Repeated letters are counted carefully. If an answer contains one R and you guess two, only one R can receive a green or yellow clue.
Each green letter adds 10 points. Finding the word earns a completion bonus that grows with every guess you have left. Your first finished Daily attempt each day is the saved daily result. Replaying the Daily answer leaves that first result intact. Practice picks a different answer from the daily word and shares its own result. Color grids do not reveal the word.
Word Beacon strategy and tips
- Begin with a guess that uses several common vowels and consonants.
- Use yellow clues in a new position on the next turn.
- Pay attention to repeated letters: not every copy of a letter must be in the answer.
Common Word Beacon mistakes
- Reusing gray letters. A gray tile means no remaining copy of that letter is in the word.
- Leaving a yellow letter in the same place. Yellow means the letter belongs elsewhere; move it to learn more.
- Assuming letters never repeat. Words such as APPLE or LEVEL use a letter twice.
- Ignoring your clues. Each guess should fit everything you already know, unless you are deliberately testing several new letters.
About Word Beacon
Word Beacon is our daily word game. Everyone gets the same answer on the same date, drawn from a list of 2,029 common English words that runs in a fixed shuffled order, so an answer does not come back for more than five years. Guesses are checked against about 6,400 accepted five-letter words.
There is no timer, and Practice offers unlimited extra words with a separate best score. Results share as a grid of coloured squares that never reveals the answer.
Word Beacon: questions and answers
Do guesses have to be real words?
Yes. Each guess must be a real five-letter English word. The game accepts about 6,400 words, so you can use common words as well as less familiar ones.
When is the answer revealed?
After you solve the puzzle or use all six guesses. Shared results use colors rather than revealing the answer.
Do practice games change my daily result?
No. Practice has its own answer and best score. The first finished Daily result for each date stays saved on this device.
How many guesses do I get?
Six. Repeating a guess you already made does not use one up.
